Abstract

Background:Conventional urethrography has been the “gold standard” in evaluating anterior urethral strictures despite its shortcomings, including ionizing radiation. Sonourethrography (SUG) is less invasive, more readily available, cheaper and does not use ionizing radiation.
Objective: To compare the detection of peri-urethral abnormalities in patients with clinically suspected anterior urethral strictures, between conventional urethrography and SUG.
Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study of 66 male patients with clinically suspected anterior urethral strictures. Those with confirmed strictures on retrograde urethrography (RUG)/ Micturating cystourethrography (MCUG) were examined using SUG. The findings from both procedures were compared. Conventional urethrography was considered as the gold standard for the comparison. The data analysis used a statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 23 (SPSS Inc., IL, USA). At a 95% confidence interval, a P-value ? 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Result: Sixty-six (66) patients were studied. The age of the participants ranged from 20 – 78 years with a mean of 56.7±13.7years. Spongiofibrosis was detected in 51 cases (77.3%) on SUG but was not shown by RUG/MCUG. Furthermore, four urethral stones and one urethral web diagnosed on SUG were not detected on RUG/MCUG.
Conclusion: Peri-urethral abnormalities were only detected on SUG.
