PROMOTING THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 16 OF PEACEFUL AND INCLUSIVE SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT BY CONFLICT RESOLUTION AMONGST HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN A TERTIARY HEALTH INSTITUTION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Background: Conflict resolution is a crucial element in the healthcare sector as it affects the standard of patient care, teamwork and overall job satisfaction among healthcare workers. This study is aimed to assess promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 of peaceful and inclusive societies and institutions for sustainable development by conflict resolution amongst healthcare workers in a tertiary health institution in Nigeria.

Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional design and multistage sampling technique were employed for this study. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect the data. The data was analysed using the statistical package for social sciences software version 26.0 and the results were presented. Inferential statistics test was deployed to test association between variables and set at p<0.05.

Results: Knowledge level was good as 211 (95.9%) respondents were able to correctly define conflict resolution and 178 (80.9%) respondents reported recognizing conflict situations. Attitude towards conflict resolution was fair as 82 (37.3%) respondents reported being very comfortable as to handling conflicts amongst co-workers. Practice of conflict resolution suggested that departments have positive approach to conflict resolution, emphasizing open communication and active listening. Majority of respondents (66.4%) found communication to be highly effective in resolving conflicts.

Conclusion: This study underscored the critical importance of conflict resolution knowledge, attitude and practice in the healthcare setting. Equipping healthcare workers with proper knowledge, skills and tools to address conflicts constructively at Edo Specialist Hospital cannot only enhance job satisfaction and teamwork among its staff but also ultimately improve patient care and outcomes.
