Abstract

Background: Globally, Nigeria is ranked among the top 20 countries for internet use, and accounts for 2.5% of the world’s internet users. Internet addiction has been described as a 21st century epidemic. Internet addiction is the inability of a person to control one’s use of the internet. There is however, a dearth of research on internet addiction and sleep quality among undergraduates in Nigeria.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of internet addiction, and examine its relationship with sleep quality among undergraduate students.

Methods: A cross-sectional method involving 310 undergraduates who were selected via multistage sampling in the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria was employed. Internet addiction and sleep quality were identified using validated tools of Internet Addiction Scale and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index respectively. Independent variables comprised of sleep quality and sociodemographic characteristics, while the dependent variables were internet addiction. Inferential statistical analysis was performed at p<0.05.

Results: The age group with the highest proportion was 21-25year category (52.6%), and the male to female ratio was 1:1.5. The prevalence of internet addiction was 21.9% (n=68). Poor sleep quality was reported in 174 of the 310 undergraduates in the study (56.1%). There was a significant relationship between internet addiction and poor sleep quality after controlling for socio-demographic characteristics (AOR:2.15,95%CI:1.19-3.87;p=0.0109).

Conclusion: About 1 in 5 undergraduates in the University of Port Harcourt were addicted to the internet, and internet addiction showed a significant positive relationship with poor sleep quality. Health education on internet addiction among undergraduates are advocated.
